About this Scholarship
Call for applications for the MEXT Undergraduate Scholarship in Japan. This scholarship is offered to undergraduate students who will study at top Japanese national universities across the country. It is provided by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology (MEXT) of Japan. This is a fully funded scholarship, and almost all expenses of the selected applicants will be covered by MEXT.
💰 Benefits & What's Covered
- Students will receive a monthly allowance of 117,000 yen.
- Students may receive an additional regional allowance of 2,000 to 3,000 yen for studying in designated areas.
- Entrance examination fees and tuition fees at Japanese universities will be waived.
- Travel expenses to Japan (and return airfare after completion) will be covered.
- Residence halls for international students may be provided by universities under certain conditions.
✅ Eligibility Criteria
Students who are currently enrolled in an undergraduate program at a university or students who are receiving preparatory education in the Japanese language and other subjects before their placement in an undergraduate program at a university.
- A student who completes the preparatory education will get admission in Japanese university after passing the entrance examination.]
- Grantees will not be allowed to change their courses after
- Grantees cannot transfer to another university during the preparatory education course or the undergraduate course.
- Grantees have to study the compulsory subjects even if they have already studied them at any other university.
- Applicants’ country should have good diplomatic relations with Japan.
- Applicants who have Japanese nationality cannot apply.
- Applicants must be born on or after April 2, 2002.
- Applicants should fulfill any one out of 3 conditions:
- Applicants who have completed 12 years of education in countries other than Japan.
- Applicants who have completed their studies at institutes equivalent to Japanese institutes in countries other than
- Applicants who have passed an examination showing equivalency to the completion of 12 years of education in countries other than Japan.
- Applicants should be willing to learn Japanese language snd carry out their academic studies in Japanese.
- Applicants have to submit a health certificate in the given format which should be signed by a physician.
- Applicants should come to Japan between April 1, 2027, and April 7, 2027.
- Applicants must newly obtain a “Student” visa before entering Japan. If students will come to Japan without newly obtaining the “Student” visa, the payment of the scholarship will be cancelled.
Non Eligibility:
- Applicants must not be military personnel or military civilian employees while availing this scholarship.
- Students who fail to come to Japan by the specified deadline.
- Applicants who have already availed Japanese Government (MEXT) Scholarship programs cannot receive this scholarship again.
- Applicants who are applying to another program under the MEXT Scholarship system.
- Students who are already admitted in a Japanese university or other institution with a residence status of
- “Student.”
- Applicants who are planning to avail other scholarships after starting this scholarship program.
- Students who will take a leave of absence from the university and study/work outside Japan.
- Applicants who have been found cheating during the written examination of the first Screening.
📄 Documents Required
For all applicants:
- Application Form (attach your recent photograph) (1 original and 1 copy).
- Academic transcripts for all school years attended which should be attested by an authorized official of the university or an examination authority. (1 copy).
- Certificate of graduation (1 copy).
- Recommendation letter from a class teacher or principal of last institute attended (1 original and 1 copy).
- Medical certificate (1 original 1 copy).
If applicable:
- Direct Placement Preference Form (1 original).
- Certificate of enrollment in a university (1 original and 1 copy).
- Certificate of university enrollment qualification examination (1 original and 1 copy).
- Certificate of language proficiency in English or Japanese (2 copies).
📝 How to Apply
- For the MEXT Undergraduate Scholarship Embassy Recommendation, applicants have to submit the required documents to the Japanese diplomatic mission in the country of the candidates’s nationality before the deadline.
- The application form can be typed or handwritten.
- First Screening of applicants will be done on the basis of submitted application documents, written academic examinations and interviews.
- Students who pass the first screening will be recommended to MEXT for second screening. MEXT will select applicants who will receive scholarship.
